                                                  About MEW’s Jewels

I received my first piece of "real" jewelry at age nine - a simulated pink tourmaline birthstone ring on my ninth birthday. I felt like a princess! I grew up in the late 1960's and early 1970's when freedom of expression was encouraged and I am a fairly nonconforming person by nature. My philosophy is that self adornment is a way of expressing our sentiment or personality and to have fun.

I'm a member of the international organization, Vintage Fashion and Costume Jewelry (VFCJ), a club & newsletter founded by Lucille Tempesta with quarterly publications and an international convention in the jewelry capital of the world, Providence, RI every other year. I had the pleasure of attending the most recent VFCJ Convention in October 2007. I also subscribe to JewelCollect, JewelryRing and DiscoveringJuliana(aka D&E)Jewelry  which are online vintage costume jewelry informational exchange and general discussion lists where many vintage jewelry reference book authors and seasoned collectors and appraisers are regular contributors.

I offer a wide selection of quality made vintage collectible jewelry and am well read on the subject. The published history of costume jewelry manufacturers and designers like ART, Boucher, Hattie Carnegie, Castlecliff, Claudette, Coro, DeLillo, Eisenberg, Florenza, Gerrys, Goldette, Haskell, Hobe, Hollycraft, Jomaz, Juliana, Karu, KJL, Carnegie, Les Bernard, Mazer, Monet, Napier, Schiaparelli, Trifari, Van Dell, Vendome, Volupte, Weiss and Whiting & Davis is both exhaustive and fascinating. My favorite reference book is Ann M. Pitman's Inside the Jewelry Box © 2004.

My personal favorite vintage styles are Napier sterling silver & Napier vermeil jewelry, big chunky Napier bracelets and Napier jingly charm bracelets from the 1940's - 1960's. The jingling of charms, coins, dangles and tassels whether signed pieces or not are very musically appealing to me! I don't exclude unsigned pieces in my collection or sales listings as I consider them to be works of art by anonymous artists. Interesting and attractive design with quality manufacturing, mint condition and collectible value are the key elements that I look for in vintage costume jewelry.

I have been a decorative painter in acrylics since 1992 studying at  Byram Brook Studio in East Bridgewater, MA. There's something about working with other artists that opens the door to higher levels of creativity and challenges a person on to new techniques and discoveries. In 2005 I  joined the Covenant Sanctuary Studio, an art collaborative for seasoned and budding artists alike located at Trinity Covenant Church in Bridgewater, MA. Thinking that I would use the time to practice decorative painting, I quickly committed to participating in the collaborative. It was at CSS that I was introduced  to the art of polymer clay and beading and little did I know that I would fall in love with the versatility and artistic joy that polymer clay work brings! There are just so many ways to express oneself with this medium!

I take commissions for personalized jewelry from your sentimental or treasured jewelry focal component. Perhaps you have a cherished ring, brooch or pendant which you would like contemporized for practical wearing. For commissioned pieces I use your vintage components for the inspiration of a beaded jewelry design, keeping  you in mind. Go to the Artisan Jewelry page.

Creating  polymer clay focal beads is one of my passions and I have found that it fits in perfectly with my love for colorful, sparkling vintage jewelry and accessories and my online sales business by incorporating vintage findings and parts into my artisan polymer clay focal bead designs.  I use methods and materials such as molds, paint, pulverized precious metal, mokume gane, water color patterns, texture patterns, mica shift (chatoyancy), embossing powders, cloisonné enameling, Skinner blending, Millefiore canes, kaleidoscope canes, metallic foils, paper, fabric, graphic transfer, shape cutters, bead rollers, glass beads, ©Swarovski crystal beads, rhinestones, precious metal wire, Soft Flex® beading wire and Diamond Flecto® varathane water based varnish. I mix my own colors and use VAN AKEN® Kato Polyclay as well as ©Polyform Product Co Premo! Sculpey. Most of my designs have metallic inclusions in the clay or added to the clay. Translucent clay gives great depth to my original mixed colors. Organic materials inspire me to create faux images of stone, wood, bone, ivory and metal.
