How to Clean and Store Vintage Costume Jewelry

Handle with TLC! Costume Jewelry was never manufactured in order to be passed down from generation to generation!  It was originally manufactured early in the 20th century, to replicate precious jewelry with the intention that it would  be discarded after use. You may be the last generation to enjoy your vintage jewelry, but to increase the chances of wearing it for many more years and passing it down please read the following:

To Clean ~ A soft baby toothbrush is perfect for cleaning around rhinestone settings. When you purchase hand-set rhinestone vintage jewelry always check the security of each setting. The glue may have become dry causing a rhinestone to fall out and become lost.

Never soak your jewelry in liquid. Not even in plain water. This will destroy the effect of foiled back stones. A baby tooth brush and a spritz & rinse jewelry cleaner  like Jewelry Joose ® is perfect for gently removing grime and dust. Pat dry and let completely dry preferably with a fan gently  blowing on the jewelry.

After wearing clip earrings or any jewelry which has come in contact with your skin, wipe away any trace of oil or perspiration. Use jewelry cleaner if necessary to return it to it's clean, dry condition.  Perspiration and oil may allow the process of  verdigris (green gunk) to begin,  which will eat away the metal finish. If you do discover a spot of verdigris try brushing it with your baby toothbrush and spritz & rinse jewelry cleaner.

To Store ~ Place in a drawer on felt or some other soft padding keeping the jewelry from rolling around and allowing the air to circulate around the jewelry. Never store in sealed plastic bags. If you live in a humid climate you may wish to purchase a small de-humidifier to place in the drawer with your jewelry. I use Eva-Dry Renewable Wireless Mini Dehumidifiers. They just plug into an electrical socket to recharge.

To Repair ~ Some repairs are simple, but unless you have the proper tools and parts, it's wisest to hire a reputable costume jewelry dealer who repairs vintage jewelry and will restore it authentically.

We at MEW's Jewels are committed to offering you vintage costume jewelry in excellent condition for your wearing pleasure and investment. We trust that you will appreciate the need to handle and clean it gently and email us for a quote  if you ever need a  repair job.
